Company description

Scaleout is a Swedish deep tech company developing a sovereign edge AI platform for federated learning in disconnected and contested environments. Scaleout Edge acts as a secure control plane for machine learning, enabling organisations to deploy, manage, and update models across large fleets of distributed devices such as vehicles, drones, and sensors.

By moving machine learning directly to the data source, the system supports continued operation and model adaptation during communication disruption. This flexible architecture preserves data sovereignty while reducing network dependence and centralised data transfer.

Showcase

Autonomous Defence Drone System

BAE Systems Bofors developed an autonomous long-range drone system for Arctic operations in just five months. The system was built with Nordic and Ukrainian startups and academic partners, using a modular design that adapts to different mission profiles and launch platforms.

Autonomy is driven by an Edge AI framework from Scaleout. The drones train and update models locally through federated learning, allowing them to operate independently in disconnected or contested environments without relying on centralised data links.

Further background on the programme is covered in this interview in Dagens Industri with Lena Gillström (CEO at Bofors): https://www.di.se/digital/bofors-rekordbygger-dronare-oppnar-for-miljardaffarer/

AI-driven Satellite Data Processing

Swedish National Space Agency and Scaleout are collaborating on a research project to reduce bandwidth demands and increase autonomy in satellite operations across civilian and defence missions.

The project applies active learning directly on satellites to filter and prioritise data before downlink, combined with federated learning between satellites and ground stations. This allows AI models to improve without sharing raw data, preserving security and data sovereignty.

A prototype will be tested in anomaly detection, collaborative object detection, and defence-oriented C4ISR scenarios, enabling timely insight even in bandwidth-constrained or disrupted environments.
